Venn_James_2a(The Following Obituary was written by Cherie Cochran Venn, the loving wife of Mr. James H. “Bucky” Venn)

A loving husband, father, brother and friend, James H. “Bucky” Venn touched the lives of so many.  A man known for his kind and gentle spirit, he was surrounded at home by those who loved him as he left peacefully to go to his eternal home with our precious Lord on Nov. 24, 2012.

Born in Gadsden, Ala., on Feb. 17, 1948, to the late James “Jimmy” Venn and Becky Reaves Vinson.  Bucky never let his youthful years of fighting kidney disease slow him from enjoying life and becoming the well-respected and loving man he was to us all.  A graduate of the Northeast Alabama Police Academy, he served 29 years with Gadsden Police Department, retiring in 2009.  During his career as a police officer, Bucky received commendations, awards and medals, including the Good Conduct Medal in 2006, as well as Officer of the Year awards in 1992 and 2006.  Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved from Glencoe to Hamilton, Ala.

His many hobbies included muscle cars, motorcycles, reading hunting magazines and the Buy Sale Bulletin.  His favorite hobby was spending time outdoors hunting with his wife, son and friends.  He was a member of the Malone Baptist Church in Gadsden.  After moving to Hamilton, he attended Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in Hamilton.

Bucky brought much joy and happiness to all who knew him.  Never meeting a stranger, he gave freely from his heart.  His compassionate ways and infectious laughter will be with us always.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Cherie Cochran Venn; son, Allen (Kim) Venn of Rainbow City; daughter, Ann (Greg) Peach of Panama City Beach, Fla.; sister, Jamie Daniel of Gadsden; brother, Ricky (Thelma) Venn of Rainbow City and Johnny (Angie) Vinson of Troy, Tenn.  Grandchildren are Jessica Johnson, Justus and Kale Venn, Skylar Gilley and great-granddaughter, Kalie Johnson.  In addition to his immediate family, Bucky is survived by his aunt, Lillian Smith of Hokes Bluff, and uncle, Ralph (Georgia) Reaves of High Point, N.C.; god-daughter, Robin Taylor; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elvis and Ellen Cochran; sister-in-law, Micki Newton; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held today at Malone Baptist Church of Gadsden from noon until 2 p.m. with a service at 2 p.m. A second service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church of Hamilton. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Hamilton Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Stanley Reed, Steve Gilliland, Jimmy Gilliland, J.D. Thomas, Greg Peach and R.D. (Mac) McDonough. Officers of the Gadsden Police Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. James Bryant and staff, Dr. Brent Boyett and staff, Dr. Wilson Cherry and the nursing staff of UAB who cared for Bucky during his illness. Special thanks are also given to A-Med Ambulance Service and Stephanie Cook of Asera Care Hospice.
