Mr. William P. “Bill” Mixon, age 65, of Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama, (formerly of Hamilton, Alabama) passed away Sunday, December 23rd, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – GT, in Columbus, Mississippi.
Visitation, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 26th, 2012, at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, Mississippi. Funeral service, 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 27th, 2012, at Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel, Columbus, Mississippi. Bro. David Westmoreland officiating. Burial in Cedar Tree Cemetery, Hackleburg, Marion County, Alabama. Pallbearers, John Partain, John Bolton, Ray Duncan, Carl Thornton, Tom Linn, and Wilburn Beatty. Mr. Mixon was born June 27th, 1947, in Russellville, Alabama, to the late Lecil Clyde Mixon, Jr. and Caroline Fite Mixon. He lived in the Molloy Community of Lamar County, Alabama. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1965 and attended Northwest Alabama Junior College, in Phil Campbell, Alabama, where he met his future bride. He graduated from Mississippi State University. He served 7 years in the Alabama National Guard, was a member of the Teamsters Union, and retired as a truck driver for Consolidated Freightway after 30 years of service. He was a member and past Master of Columbus Lodge #5 F&AM, a member of Scottish Rite and York Rite Masonic Bodies, Order of Eastern Star, and Vernon Masonic Lodge #389, Vernon, Alabama. He was a member of Southern Cruisers Car Club of Columbus, Mississippi, and the Lamar County Historical Society. He was also a member of the Lamar County Sons of Liberty SAR, where he held various offices. Mr. Mixon was a member of Border Springs Baptist Church, Caledonia, Mississippi, where he served as a deacon and various other positions. He was also a Gideon. He was a frequent customer at local coffee shops, was an avid Mississippi State fan, and enjoyed riding in his antique cars in Christmas Parades and throwing out Christmas candy. He married Jackie Knight Mixon at Border Sprigs Baptist Church in Caledonia, Mississippi, December 23rd, 1973.
Mr. Mixon is survived by his wife, Jackie Knight Mixon, Sulligent, AL.; daughter, Emma Jane Mixon, Sulligent, AL.; 1 sister, Carrie Mixon Bolton, Hamilton, AL.; 2 nephews, John Bolton and Jeremy Jones; and 1 niece, Melissa Hatle.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mixon was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Doyle Knight and mother-in-law, Alice Knight.
