Larry Chandler, age 68, of Bessemer, AL, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014 at UAB West in Bessemer, AL. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. from Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Wofford Cemetery. Bro. Chris Sullivan will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 until service time at 2:00 P.M.

Larry was born December 18, 1945 in Lamar County, Alabama to the late Drolan and Evelyn Flynn Chandler. He was a reflection of a winning team of players especially in his high school years at Sulligent High School in basketball. Larry showed great leadership skills, being elected President of his senior class at Sulligent for the class of 1964 and also on the basketball court; even playing with a fractured arm and kept striving on the court to help capture the winning plays. He would later graduate from the University of Alabama with a major in Social Work and a minor in Psychology. Larry was retired from retail sales, working as one of the top salesman for Dollar General and Family Dollar in the Jefferson County area. He was a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, AL. Larry was a beloved husband and father; his legacy was to teach his family to love the Lord with all your heart and soul.

*Sarah Angelyn Pearce Irwin was born on October 1, 1931, in Detroit, Alabama, and died on February 16, 2014, at her home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Mrs. Irwin was a graduate of Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Alabama, and Birmingham Baptist Nursing School in Birmingham, Alabama. While in nursing school, she met her husband, Dr. Alton Roland Irwin. They married in 1954 and lived in West Monroe, Louisiana until 2000 when they moved to Hattiesburg. Mrs. Irwin was a devoted volunteer with the March of Dimes, Junior Charity League, and the Boy’s Club, and she assisted her husband in his medical practice. Her most cherished calling, however, was that of wife and mother. She is survived by two daughters, Cherie Irwin of Monroe, Louisiana, and Renee Leigh and husband Dr. Joe Nick Leigh of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; son Dr. Roland Irwin and wife Britta of Wynne, Arkansas; grandchildren, Prentice Lenard and Hannah Irwin of Monroe, Louisiana; Angelyn Rogers and husband Brian, Sarah Catherine Leigh, Mark Leigh, and Caroline Leigh, all of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Daniel Leigh of Oxford, Mississippi; Brooke Smith and husband Charlie of Paragould, Arkansas; Alton Irwin of San Antonio, Texas; great-grandchildren Daniel Irwin; James, Samuel, Grace, John, and Claire Renee Rogers; Irwin Leigh; Olivia Irwin and Brayden Smith. Pallbearers will be Prentice Lenard, Brian Rogers, Daniel Leigh, Mark Leigh, Charlie Smith, and Alton Irwin.**
