Mr. Phillip Ray Wright, age 90 of Vernon, AL, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.
Mr. Wright was born August 6, 1926, in Marion Co., AL, to the late Henry Ferris and Alma Elizabeth Wright. He served in the U.S. Army and fought in Europe during World War II. Mr. Wright taught for over 30 years and was principal at Hamilton and Vernon. He also ran a Ben Franklin Store for eleven years. Mr. Wright was an avid coon hunter and loved his grandchildren, great-children, his hound dogs, and his horses. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and talking about coon hunting.
Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Victor Wright and Lemuel Wright; and four sisters, Deamie Green, Sybil Mixon, Ozell Cannerday, and Drew Holloway.
Graveside services will be Saturday morning at 10:00 at Lamar Memory Gardens with David Sullivan and Jammie Turner officiating.
Active pallbearers will be John David Robertson, Stoney Price, Jimmy Hollis, Ken Hopper, David Crosby, and Brandon Speck. Honorary pallbearers will be Benny Northam, Adam Swander, Dan Swander, and Jody Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Wright of Vernon, AL; two sons, Randy (Kathy) Wright of Decatur, AL and Kevin Wright of Vernon, AL; one daughter, Renee Wright of Vernon, AL; one brother, Jack Wright of Montgomery, AL; one sister, Jessie Neal of Texas; five grandchildren, Chad Wright, Jessica (Brandon) Speck, Kevin Wright, Christy Stalnaker, and Austin Landgraf; and four great-grandchildren, Carley Wright, Zaiden Wright, Spencer Speck, and Finley Speck.*
