Winfield, AL – James Travis “J.T.” Benton, age 96, of Winfield, Alabama, passed away Friday, September 21st, 2018 in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield. Alabama.
Visitation, Monday, September 24th, 2018, 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. at the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home, in Winfield, Alabama. Funeral service, 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 24th, at the funeral home chapel in Winfield, Alabama. Burial in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens. Dr. Paul Murphy officiating. Matthew Langston, David Burgess, Jerrod Walker, Joseph Walker, Mike Johnson, Dusty Lindley, Greg Tucker and Taz Morell, active pallbearers.
“J.T.” was born March 19th, 1922, in Fayette County, Alabama to the late James Travis and Emma Roby Benton. He owned and operated his own truck for 50 years hauling coal and fertilizer. He was a member of the Winfield First Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon. He was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He loved his family and enjoyed working in his garden.
He is survived by his daughters, Wanda Walker of Winfield, AL., Barbara (Wayne) Tucker of Dora, AL., and Martha (Wayne) Weakley of Tuscaloosa, AL.; sisters, Maebelle Cagle of Winfield, AL., and Billie Ruth Eads of Kansas; grandchildren, Anita Johnson, Michael Langston, Matthew Langston, Annette Lindley, David Burgess, Melissa Morell, Rana Tucker, Jerrod Walker and Joseph Walker; 16 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Travis and Emma Roby Benton; his wife of over 50 years, Lucy Perry Benton; 2 sisters, Mary Lou Benton and Emma Dean Herren; 1 brother, Marion Bud Benton; 1 grandson, Chris Langston; 2 great-grandsons, Owen Douglas Walker and Shields Thomas Walker; and son-in-law, Douglas Walker.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Kemp Meadows, Sunset Manor, Hospice of Northwest Alabama and Northwest Medical Center.
