An Aside by the Author, Judy Webb Mays:

Humphreys_Carl_Butch“Butch”, as he was known to his sisters, Neta and Suzye, and brother Rick, his uncle Clark, and multitude of cousins, (like me*), was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. But “Butch” was no stranger to Sulligent, and Crews, Alabama, where came often with his grandfather, LJ “J” and his grandmother, Margie Otts Rye to visit his family there. When he was looking for a “home-place” after his grandparents passed away, he found and bought land in Detroit, Alabama where he would come from time to time and bring his friends who liked to hunt. He had a small rustic cabin there where they would “camp out”. “Butch” (as he told me) didn’t like the hunting so much but he liked to see his friends have a good time! They would eat at the “Wood Pecker” a local steak house, and many times, on the first Saturday night of the month, he’d go to Randy Rye’s Auction there in Detroit.

“Butch” was an avid collector of Rye Pottery and would travel far and wide to find a piece of his family’s pottery!  Our Rye family brought their pottery making skills over from “the old country” and made pottery in the Detroit, Alabama area for over a hundred years, a heritage that “Butch” very much treasured! We will miss him, that quick smile and the “bear hugs”! The last time I saw him, at another of our cousin’s funeral, he knew his time was short, and he said to me “Now, when you hear this about me, I don’t want you to cry for me, no tears!” And I told him that I couldn’t promise that! He squeezed my hand and gave me a big hug and he was gone. I’ll miss you, my dear cousin. You will be with me in my heart forever!
