Pope_DavidHamilton, AL – Mr. David Ray Pope, age 75, of Hamilton, Alabama, passed away Monday, May 5th, 2014, at the DCH (Druid City Hospital) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Visitation, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 8th, 2014, at the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton, Alabama.  Funeral service, 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 9th, 2014, at Happy Hill Church near Hamilton, Alabama.  Burial in James Creek Cemetery, in Itawamba County, just off State Line Road near the Mississippi Alabama line.

Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc., directing.

Author’s note:  I would like to say that Mr. Pope, as I respectfully called him, although he was just a few years older than me, was a most precious neighbor and friend.  He was in some way related to my mother-in-law, Mary Nell Pope Mays, and therefore to my son, Wayne, and his late father, Gary Wayne Mays, Sr.  My friend Don and I took a quick liking to him and his (late) wife when they moved into our small neighborhood several years ago and upon finding out his name was Pope, I immediately set about to find out how we were ‘Kin’ or rather how he was ‘kin’ to my mother-in-law.  I was surprised to find that he had worked at radio and television stations when they lived ‘up north’.  And that he had worked some or ‘volunteered’ some time at local tv stations in Fulton, Mississippi and in Hamilton, Alabama.  He was a H.A.M. Radio enthusiast and loved the internet…mostly he loved being in touch with his family and folks with whom he had worked and gone to church while ‘Up North’!  He loved going to church and had been attending the Detroit Church of God, in Detroit, Alabama, as his health permitted.  He attended school at Hamilton High in Hamilton, Alabama.  Mr. Pope has 4 daughters whom I will name later and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of whom I will try to mention in my obituary as I receive the information. Don and I will miss him so much.

*(Editorial words by Judy Webb Mays – jmays@49countynews.net)  Beverly was a 1966 graduate of Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Alabama.  She began working as secretary for Judge Nelson Vinson in Hamilton, Alabama, while still in high school and continued until her retirement.  After graduation, she married Burnie Rye of Smithville, Mississippi.  Beverly and Burnie resided in Smithville, Mississippi, but Beverly continued for many years to travel to Hamilton, Alabama daily to work for Mr. Vinson at his office there.  She loved her church and her family, and continued to keep up with classmates from Hamilton High School.  It was she who started a gathering of the Class of ’66’ at OH!Bryan’s Steak House in Hamilton on the first Friday of every other month.  There were times it was just she who ended up at the meetings but many times I was there as well.  Her last conversation with me was to ask me to call the classmates together for our first Friday meeting for February 7th, 2014.  Even though she was sick, and could not attend, she was still thinking of her classmates get-together…Beverly, you will be missed and we love you!  Sincerely, Judy Webb Mays and all of your classmates and friends!
*Replies and comments to this editorial will be welcomed; especially if you have something kind you want to say about Beverly.
